Pro breakdown of volume-smoke edge bands, flash contrast recovery, and how to time the first shot when Mirage halls and Ancient ramps stretch the second gear longer than Dust2 long doors.
Lead: A lot of first contacts are lost before aim ever matters. Three clocks stack wrong—the smoke has not sealed the edge, the flash has not returned readable contrast, and your burst interval already fired a second round from muscle memory. This note splits the problem along edge—light—gun.
Smoke edges are not walls: half-slots in the gradient band
Volume smoke in the engine is not a binary. The outer rim carries a gradient strip: the silhouette still counts as inside smoke, but your crosshair can already frame half a shoulder line. In pro lobbies the classic misread is assuming CT is still on pure smoke, while T-side already holds illegal but usable preview pixels.
Mnemonic: mark default hall mouths and tight corridor corners with three tiers—fully blind / shoulder flicker / full outline stable. If first peek training is only "angle out, click," on medium-thickness layouts like Mirage A hall or Ancient ramp mouth, tier-two dwell often runs a beat longer than Dust2 long door gap, because the smoke blob is bigger and the edge band wider. Delaying the smoke half a second on T side is not "one extra glance blocked"—it turns CT retake from "wait for fade" into trading inside the gradient. The round rhythm thickens immediately.
Flash white: full-blind frames vs readability slope
Full white-screen time feels short, but white to health-bar readable follows a recovery slope. At close full blind you often feel "I can see now" while crosshair contrast is still low—first shot in the spray tends high. Far-angle partial flashes invert: less white, but outline stabilizes half a beat late.
Practical ledger:
- Single flash hard swing: end of white ≈ when you want shot one; if smoke edge is still tier two, you are dueling in low contrast plus half-shoulder.
- Chain-flash debt: a second grenade landing in smoke-edge jitter stacks white and gradient; CT retake can grab legal pixels one frame before flash ends—common mid-map thickness where "we flashed and still lost" is not props alone.
Skip unpublished patch numbers; record frames in a practice server: flash pop to crosshair stably tracking a moving dummy—mark your readability point.
Gun rhythm: pin shot one at edge-exit ∩ readability
Hard swing rhythm splits three steps, not "peek—spam":
- Edge probe: small shoulder test the gradient—pure smoke or tier two; pure smoke means wait for CT fire or add flash.
- Read confirm: after white, leave one interval you measured before shot one (resolution and frame time differ—calibrate yourself).
- Burst contract: shot two only after shot-one feedback (hit sound / tracer); else you donate a static target on the smoke rim.
Default BO1 week prep can block same spot: full smoke-edge trade, post-flash single tap, flash-smoke misalignment—avoid deathmatch-only timing locked to one scenario. If you compare in-game feel when buying skins, C5GAME or the Steam market shows wear consistently, but first-contact phase trusts server smoke volume and flash blind only—do not use inspect-spin brightness as contrast reference.
Close: volume smoke eats when legal pixels appear; flash white eats when contrast normalizes; gun rhythm must nail shot one at their intersection, not at the fastest mouse click.
