A pro-level breakdown of Inferno's Banana Alley and Pit, treating utility usage as a three-layer ledger: positioning, smoke/fire, and post-plant. Learn how to avoid self-blocking and turn every nade into an entry tool.
The term 'Banana Alley' is overused. But anyone who's clutched around the Pit knows this alley was never just a corridor. It's a three-layer ledger: first layer is positioning, second is smoke and fire, third is the clutch. Misread any layer, and your utility line turns from an entry tool into a self-seal.
Layer 1: Positioning Ledger – The Barrel Isn't Cover, It's a Timer
When entering Banana Alley on T side, your first decision point isn't at the barrel—it's two steps before it. Many treat the barrel as cover: stand still, aim, wait for teammates. That's treating a timer as a wall.
The correct read: the barrel is the trigger point for the CT's Pit utility line. The frame you step onto the barrel's front edge, the CT at Pit can already start reading your position. At this moment, the T side shouldn't be dueling; instead, use a molotov to clear the right-side凹 corner of the Pit into a 'no-stand zone,' forcing the CT to give up the first angle to behind the site.
A detail here: the molotov's landing point isn't the center of the凹 corner, but the half-meter near the wall. A center fire leaves a wall-hugging gap, allowing CT to hold you from the fire's edge; a wall-hugging fire truly cuts that gap. This is the first entry in the positioning ledger—you're not burning a person, you're burning that gap.
Layer 2: Smoke & Fire Ledger – The Pit Smoke Isn't Blocking the Path, It's Blocking Sightline Heights
The most misunderstood utility at the Pit is smoke. Many habitually smoke the Banana Alley exit, thinking cutting off CT's line of fire ensures safety. The problem: CT's sightlines at the Pit are multiple:
- Flat sightline from the Pit window
- High sightline from the box behind the site
- Diagonal sightline from the big pit
One smoke can only cut one height. If you smoke the flat line, CT stands on the box; if you smoke the high line, CT crouches at the window.
So the smoke & fire ledger at the Pit should be recorded like this: first use a molotov to force out the CT at the Pit window, then smoke the high sightline from the box behind the site, and finally use a second molotov to suppress the diagonal from the big pit. Three utilities aren't a choice of one, but buying each of the three sightline heights once.
If you only have two utilities, give up the big pit and have a teammate pull from A side. This isn't saving utility; it's transferring the account to another line.
Layer 3: Clutch Ledger – Planting at the Pit Isn't the End, It's Turning the Page
After planting at the Pit, the T side's most common mistake is everyone retreating to Banana Alley. That's giving all three sightlines around the site to CT.
The correct clutch record: after planting, leave at least one person behind the low wall on the site's flank—not to duel, but to make CT calculate an extra position when defusing. Once CT has to watch both Banana Alley and the low wall, the defuse timer gets chopped up.
For the CT side defending the Pit, the core of the clutch ledger isn't retaking the site, but first regaining that smoke at the Banana Alley exit. Once the smoke is in place, CT can push in reverse from Banana Alley, linking T's escape route and the site into one line.
Utility Lines Aren't Templates, They're Accounting Habits
Many ask: why does the same smoke, when thrown by a pro, create an entry, but when I throw it, create a self-seal? Because pros record three layers, you only record the first.
The utility lines for Banana Alley and the Pit are essentially a set of accounting habits: the positioning ledger decides when you act, the smoke & fire ledger decides which sightline you buy, and the clutch ledger decides whether you turn the page. When all three accounts align, utility lines are an entry; when they don't, utility lines are a self-seal.
Next time you enter Banana Alley, don't rush to throw a smoke. First ask yourself: which layer of the ledger am I buying with this one?
