Smoke-Shell Refraction Bands and Full-White Tail Frames: Who Owns the Duel in a Three-Beat Peek

CS2 duels often fail when smoke-edge visibility, flash white-screen length, and your first legal shot frame stack wrong. This note breaks reproducible default-rhythm accounting—no leaked patch numbers—so you can retrain peek timing on map-specific choke points.

Lead Most post-mortems stop at “someone was in the smoke” or “I got flashed.” The useful split is three layers at once: when a volumetric smoke turns you from outline to silhouette on the shell, how many frames of full white remain, and which legal window your click actually lands in. Below is player-notebook accounting—default props, reproducible rhythm, no undisclosed patch values.

Smoke shell: you do not go blind only when you step inside

Volumetric smoke in CS2 has a shell. Outside it you may still catch shoulder sway or barrel glint; inside, information goes to zero. The classic misread is treating “I’m hugging the smoke” as “I’ve lost intel”—if they sit half a tile outside the shell, you can still get one outline update on the same tick, then the shell eats you on the next.

Drill ledger: Drop two defaults from the same spot and watch whether the second thickens the first shell’s outer band. After thickening, a pre-aim still locked on the old edge sends round one into empty refraction on the band; by spread resolution you’re already half a body width out—that is the smoke-edge version of “same spot, different frame.”

The holder should park crosshair one tile inside the outer band, not the smoke core; the peeker should stop on the shell tangent so the shoulder only appears on the last frame. Mirage mid narrow lane and Ancient outer slope—in many default first halves, whoever sells that frame first decides trade or free death.

Full white vs half-fall: waking up is not the legal frame

Flash white feels like a black hole in feel, but duel rhythm splits into three beats: full white, high-contrast afterglow, readable silhouette. Many click the instant white ends while brightness still flattens the reticle—first-shot spread does not match “I thought I saw him.” Worse: default goggles can shorten their half-fall versus your full white—you wake on beat two while they’re already on beat one’s legal frame.

Three-beat duel template:

  1. Beat one: Move only inside white; use audio and bearing to lock a rough axis.
  2. Beat two: Small shoulder inside the half-fall window; fire only at confirmed silhouettes, do not chase full info.
  3. Beat three: After outline stabilizes, second shot or tuck to thick cover.

In double-flash phasing, a second grenade landing on the tail of the first half-fall can crush the enemy’s beat two into the end of beat one—why pro lobbies often flash then immediately swing: the bet is time sovereignty, not chip damage.

Overlap: third tile on the smoke edge vs flash window drift

When smoke shell and flash window overlap, the lie is “I thought he was still inside.” The shell slows outline refresh; the flash erases the last shoulder frame. If your default line changes coordinates but not fuse and bounce timing, shell thickness shifts and the flash window slides relative to body position—last season’s “third tile on the edge” may be a fourth under current defaults; re-test first-contact order.

Week 39 training: Pick a Major pool overlap map, one fixed default smoke-flash set; record demos marking three timestamps—first shell-outside outline, full-white end tick, your first-shot key tick. If gaps exceed your usual counter-strafe close, rewrite rhythm on smoke and flash windows, not sensitivity.

Buying skins on C5GAME or the Steam Market does not change these frames; listing previews and in-match HDR differ and can train a “bright equals safe” habit in casual. If you inspect under C5GAME lighting, still calibrate the three-beat peek from demo frames in competitive.

Close Smoke edge governs when information is legal; flash governs when the reticle is trustworthy. Duel rhythm is not fire rate—it is stacked accounting on ticks. Put outer-band one tile, half-fall window, and second legal frame on one page; default first halves lose fewer “I saw him but whiffed” taxes.
