Spirit’s A-Site Open: Diagonal Refrag Lanes and the Post-Plant Ledger of “Stay Alive, Then Defuse”

Spirit’s wide A executes run on numbered diagonal lanes—two angles force utility, the third refrags without stacking sightlines. In post-plants they trade bomb geometry for confirmed lines and information, not timer heroics.

Lead On Spirit’s A takes, the story is rarely the opening pick alone. Their default is a numbered diagonal: first contact forces utility, second body only refrags, third never shares the same door overlap. That same logic flips in clutches to live first, defuse second—fewer fake timer gambles, more rounds bought with information.

Default open: dual diagonal, third on refrag duty

On wide A sites—Mirage A, Ancient’s A-side pocket—they often skip five-man sync for 2+1 diagonal: two players pressure from different angles off-beat, while the third (rifler or lurk) holds half-width smoke edge or short-box cut line. The job is not first blood; it is trade the first duel, then instantly refrag.

This splits A mini / connector from wide entry, so the team does not eat one retake flash together. Utility is back-loaded: deep smoke opens inside the site; open smokes cover one read angle (jump spot or short head line). The second flash is often low, at feet—defenders fully white and yield, or fall to deep positions with no refrag. Spirit’s second body follows half a beat, never chases deep.

If first contact stalls 1-for-1, the third does not re-peek the same window. They swing connector or outer A for a fresh duel—map width buys two isolated fights, not one five-versus-five stack.

Clutch habit: information stop-loss beats site geometry

In 1v2 and 1v3, Spirit clears living CT lines before touching the bomb. With two double-hold lanes live after plant, they rarely camp default defuse and hard-read the timer. They break one rotate line or bait the last utility, shrinking the round to 1v1 or pure info. That mirrors CT-side utility for time—on T post-plant, time is not the top resource; a confirmed safe angle is.

They also run fake defuse, real retreat in one beat: tap defuse at site edge to draw a peek, then fall to a cleared refrag corner and hold back. If CT does not bite, real defuse for half a second and break again—draining mind and nades, not standing ten seconds straight.

Two notes for your book: who survives last should carry memory of next round’s default A smoke-flash roles (who throws deep, who feet-flashes). Clutches lost often come from “three extra seconds for site geometry,” not aim.

Where copying Spirit’s A default stops

In stack play, copy diagonal roles and refrag spots, not exact timings and nade pixels—map pool, opponent defaults, and economy shift the second-contact window. Drill: custom 2v2 A only—first player may only force utility; second cannot refrag the same window. Post-plant drill: within 20 seconds after plant, force one clear a line or bait utility before long defuse. On demos, ignore marketplace noise; watch whether the third body changes window within five seconds of the first kill. If yes, that is Spirit-style A. If not, it is usually five-man sync feeding overlap.
