Introduction

If you're shopping a Fade skin, you're not picking a single knife model—you're picking a knife and a color roll. Valve's internal tag is aa_fade: chrome base, airbrushed transparent layers that shift when you spin the inspect view. Skeleton, Flip, Karambit, and the rest share the same logic; listings on C5GAME and the Steam Community Market split hard by blade type, float, and how much yellow-to-purple actually sits on the steel.

Release & drop source

18 November 2019, with Operation Shattered Web. Fade entered the Shattered Web Case pool—the moment "fade knife" stopped being a niche label and became something collectors chase across the whole knife category.

Who designed it

Valve in-house, not a Workshop submission. Official line: chrome exterior, spray-brush electroplating, soft color transitions. Side angles and inspect spins move the band edges—that's why screenshots lie and in-game inspect wins.

Case odds vs secondary market

Chasing a drop means Shattered Web Case keys and RNG. Most finished Fades you will actually buy already circulate on C5GAME or Steam; spreads are wide—model, float, fade tier.

"It's not just a weapon—it's a statement." — Imogen, Trainee Arms Dealer (Shattered Web flavor text). That fits how people buy Fade: draw animation and a clean band often beat spreadsheet DPS.

What to inspect in-game

Same skin name, different paintable area per knife. Where the gradient starts, whether the band sits centered, and how much face real estate gets color—all blade-dependent. Lower float usually looks cleaner, but pattern placement still decides the flex. Wide blades (Skeleton, etc.) often pop when the band crosses the spine; slim profiles need the fade on the front face. Use C5GAME high-res inspect before checkout so hue and placement match what you paid for.

Shopping verdict

Worth it if you will inspect live, you care about fade % / band position, and you accept that two "same" listings can look nothing alike. Pass or downgrade if you only trust thumbnails, you need BS-tier budget skins (this finish barely exists there), or you expect one price for all Karambits regardless of pattern.

Editor's notes

Treat Fade like a pattern skin on a knife chassis: the aa_fade code is the constant, the knife model is the variable. Shattered Web Case unboxing is nostalgia; serious buys are almost always second-hand on C5 or Steam. In a 0.08-max world, haggling over 0.01 float can be rational when the band sits wrong at 0.04—always reconcile float with where the colors landed, not float alone.
