Introduction
Among knife finishes, Marble Fade stacks black-and-silver faux marble under three gradient candy coats—hard to miss in a loadout. Valve’s recipe: metal paint for the stone look, then triple color glaze on top. When light sweeps the blade, that old line about the edge “showing rainbow or red” is basically buyer slang: some patterns lean fire-red, some ice-blue, some sit dead center—and you can usually tell in one spin of the inspect view.
Release
January 8, 2015 — finish am_marble_fade (Finish Catalog 413) shipped with the Full Spectrum update. It’s early-era “gradient plus texture” done at full rarity on knives.
Designer
Valve — in-house finish, not a Workshop skin author.
Which case
Same day: Chroma Case went live. Marble Fade became one of the headline knife finishes in drops and unboxings, and it’s stayed near the top of search filters ever since.
Specs that matter when you shop

The black-silver base sets vein direction and contrast; the outer tri-color glaze wraps the belly, spine, and edge. Same float, different pattern can mean totally different red/yellow/blue splits—tip-heavy color vs a cleaner spine is night and day.
What to check before you pay
- In-game inspect beats thumbnails. Where the marble “heart” sits, whether gradient climbs the spine, and if the tip drinks extra pigment matter more than a static listing shot.
- Wear ceiling 0.08 keeps the finish readable even on higher floats, but Factory New vs Minimal Wear still shows—don’t assume “low max float” means every MW looks the same.
- Chasing community pattern nicknames? On C5GAME or Steam Community Market, compare pattern index listing to listing; don’t gamble on a screenshot.
- Rotate 3D inspect under different lighting—watch for flat “dead black” patches or harsh color breaks that a front-facing icon hides.
Shop verdict
Buy when you’ve seen the exact pattern in-game (or a trusted inspect link) and the price matches the color balance you actually want—not the generic “marble fade” label. Skip impulse buys on “looks FN in the icon” listings; the 0.08 cap helps, but pattern is half the flex.
Editor’s aside
I treat Marble Fade like jewelry: two knives at 0.03 float can feel like different skins. If you’re upgrading from a play knife, budget an extra hour on C5GAME filters—sort by pattern, open inspect, repeat. Your wrist will thank you more than your wallet will punish you.
