Introduction

Slaughter is not tied to one knife model—it is the anodized multicolor finish with internal id am_zebra. Valve’s preview uses the Talon Knife (widowmaker): zebra stripes open across the blade, capped by a tomato-red candy coat that reads loud in inspect. Swap knife types and the stripe layout reshapes to the new mesh, but the red-over-chrome identity stays the same.

Release & source

August 1, 2018 — shipped with Valve’s A New Horizon drop and the Horizon Case on the same day. Slaughter entered the knife finish pool at Rare tier. No Community Workshop credit here; pattern placement, aluminum/chrome layering, and wear curves follow Valve’s in-house knife pipeline.

What you are actually buying

  • Category: Knife finish
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Finish: Anodized multicolor
  • Float window: 0.01 – 0.26 (no Factory New ceiling beyond that band on paper—plan around this range)

Layer stack in plain terms: zebra base, aluminum + chrome with mismatched reflectivity for flash, then the warm red candy shell. Low float keeps the coat glossy and the chrome punchy; as wear climbs, candy coat and anodized edges give way—base metal, scuffs, and broken stripe segments show up fast in inspect.

Inspect checklist

Spin the knife in inspect and watch red vs specular hotspots move with the light. Side-by-side ~0.01 vs ~0.26 is the money comparison: lower float stays saturated red with crisp metal glints; high float dulls the red veil and fogs chrome, which can look “battle-hardened” or just tired depending on pattern luck.

Horizon Case is the classic unbox path; on secondary markets, filter by knife model + Slaughter + anodized multicolor on C5GAME or Steam Community Market.

Shop verdict

Worth a look if you want a recognizable, aggressive red knife that still feels “classic CS” (2018 Horizon era), or you are filling a Horizon-themed loadout. Pattern variance matters—budget time to scroll listings or hold out for a stripe layout you like.

Think twice if you need pixel-clean FN aesthetics but only find high-float copies; the 0.26 cap means “almost no wear” options can get pricey, and a cheap high-float piece may lose the candy-coat magic.

Sweet spot: mid-low float where red stays rich but you are not overpaying for marginally cleaner chrome.

Expert mutterings

Slaughter is one of those finishes where inspect animation is the whole sales pitch—screenshots lie, video does not. Because it is Valve-native and case-anchored to Horizon, it avoids workshop-drama pricing spikes, but knife tax still applies: the same finish on a flex model vs a budget skeleton can be night and day. I treat am_zebra like a stripe lottery—buy the float band you can afford, then hunt the pattern, not the other way around.
