Introduction
Doppler finishes on knives are easy to spot from a distance: black-and-silver marble metal under a high-gloss “candy shell” that shifts hue as you tilt the model. Phase 3 is one of the phase variants in the same multicolor electroplating line—the paint lands differently from Phase 1, 2, or 4, so thumbnails and static screenshots lie more often than they help.
Valve’s own line about being fooled by the look is fair warning: the skin reads playful, the item is still a knife. For shopping, treat pattern + wear as the real product, not the vibe.
Release & pedigree
Shipped 8 January 2015 with the Full Spectrum update, Doppler knife finishes entered the pool via the Chroma Case. Phase 3 shares the same case and finish family as the other phases; the phase label is fixed only after unbox—or when you verify a specific listing.
Designed in-house by Valve. To confirm Phase 3, lean on primary color block size, band direction, and how paint sits on tip and spine—not the seller’s phase tag alone.
Where it drops
All Doppler knife phases roll from Chroma Case opens. On C5GAME or the Steam Community Market, open the listing inspect view and spin the model; don’t phase-guess from a tiny icon.
Skin facts (buy-side)
- Item: knife · Finish: Doppler · Phase: 3
- Rarity: Mythical · Style: multicolor electroplating
- Wear range: 0.00–0.08 → Factory New and Minimal Wear only
Marble grain comes from stacked black/silver metallics; the “candy” feel is specular highlight and saturated edges. Rotate inspect: bands move with angle. Because the cap is 0.08, fog on tip or guard kills edge definition fast—band borders blur sooner than on wide-range skins.
What actually moves price
Same Phase 3 still rolls pattern RNG: slow 360° inspect for full primary color vs. scuffs cutting across bands. Narrow wear window means float and in-hand look stay coupled—FN vs. MW often hinges on a clean tip line. Chroma Case + 2015 launch gives the line a clear collectibility story if you’re filling phases or building a knife loadout.
Shopping verdict
Worth it if you want a recognizable Doppler phase and you’ll spend time in 3D inspect before paying a premium for “clean tip / strong color.” Skip impulse buys on phase-tagged listings without inspect—Phase 3 is pattern-sensitive and the wear ceiling is unforgiving.
Budget tip: MW with a sharp tip and intact bands can outperform a lazy FN on paper; let the spin decide, not the float alone.
Expert chatter
Phase 3 isn’t “better” than other phases—it’s different geometry on the marble. Collectors pay for band layout; flippers pay for tip clarity. On C5GAME, compare two listings side by side in inspect: same phase, different seed, totally different mood. If the candy shine hides scuffs until you zoom the tip, that’s the skin working against you—spin once, then spin again slower.
